Staycations are set to prove hugely popular with British holidaymakers this summer, according to new readership data from Taboola. Recent and forecast heatwaves coupled with the cost-of-living crisis are driving UK holidaymakers to choose British destinations like Devon, Cornwall, and Scotland.
The UK Met Office has forecast an unusually hot summer for 2025, with UK staycation spots offering an affordable, low-effort alternative to traditional overseas favourites such as Spain and Italy.
Taboola analysed readership trends across its network of UK media publishers from recent weeks, to identify which destinations British holidaymakers are reading about most in the run-up to peak travel season.
The data found that, over the last three months:
- Articles related to the UK and Tripadvisor received nearly three times as many pageviews (290%) compared with the previous 45 days, indicating a growing interest in UK travel in the run-up to the summer.
- Articles relating to British beaches rose by 102%, versus the previous 45 days. By comparison, pageviews for Spanish beaches dropped by 93%.
- Devon, Cornwall, and Northumberland are the top beachside destinations for UK holidaymakers.
David Struzzi, Communications Lead at Taboola, said: “Our readership data indicates that the UK’s pleasant weather is inspiring British holidaymakers to take their summer trip closer to home. Destinations on the outermost edges of the UK are proving most popular: in particular, we’ve seen a surge in readership for articles around Devon and Cornwall in the South, and Northumberland and Scotland in the North.
“Readership data is instrumental for helping the travel industry predict tourism trends ahead of the summer. Analysing which destinations people are reading about can help to determine where they’re likely to book their next holiday, before they’ve decided themselves.”
