This week’s stories spotlight a week of fierce competition from regulators, challenging Big Tech on safety, to media giants battling AI companies in court. In today’s MadTech Daily, we cover Netflix and Amazon teaming up to boost CTV ads, UK ad-funded SVOD reach tripling, and Meta adding alerts to Community Notes fact checks.
The European Commission is weighing restrictions that would bar children under 16 from social media, mirroring Australia’s approach. President Ursula von der Leyen said a panel will be convened by year-end to explore ways to make platforms safer for minors.
Streaming has also officially overtaken linear TV in Germany for the first time. A new Bitkom report shows 87% of German adults now use streaming services, compared to 86% watching linear, with the decline in traditional TV viewership driving the shift.
Meanwhile, Mergers and acquisitions momentum is building in ad tech and media. Minute Media has completed its largest deal to date with the acquisition of VideoVerse, bolstering its sports tech and video ambitions. On the sell-side, Magnite has snapped up streamr.ai, a CTV-focused AI platform designed to simplify advertising for SMBs.
Roblox also experiments with short-form clips with the launch of “Roblox Moments,” a TikTok-style feature that lets users share gameplay clips.
AI’s copyright battles intensified this week, with Anthropic agreeing to pay at least USD $1.5bn (£1.11bn) to settle claims from authors who said their books were used without permission to train its AI systems. Warner Bros. also sued Midjourney, accusing the startup of exploiting its IP including Superman, Batman, and Bugs Bunny without consent.
