Taboola: EV Controversy Drives Huge Readership Spike
by on 5th Mar 2026 in News

Pageviews for articles about electric cars have shot up by 166% over the past three months, reflecting a growing scepticism towards the alternative vehicle type, according to Taboola.
Data from Taboola Newsroom, which monitors readership trends across Taboola’s international network of publisher partners, shows that UK articles about EVs have generated more than 1.5 million pageviews in the last 90 days.
Electric vehicles have faced significant controversy over recent months, with several car brands, including Porsche and Lamborghini, backtracking on plans to launch new all-electric ranges.

In November last year, the chancellor Rachel Reeves announced a new road tax for electric vehicles, which were previously exempt from the duties imposed on petrol cars. For many, this new road charge removed one of the key benefits of owning an EV.
It’s not all bad news for the electric car industry, however. Chinese EV brands have prospered in recent months, with BYD recently overtaking Tesla as the world’s biggest EV manufacturer. Articles about BYD have received 240,000 views in the last three months.
"Love them or hate them, the public is fascinated by the patchy progress of the EV industry," said David Struzzi, communications lead at Taboola. "High costs and long charge times has led to a decline in demand for electric vehicles over recent months, with news headlines reflecting this trend. But with the UK’s deadline for ending the sale of petrol cars set for 2035, this certainly isn’t the end for electric vehicles. Publishers will be watching out to see how this story unfolds over the coming months."
