Digest: Meta Names New CMO & First Chief Data Officer; Australia Sues Amazon

In today’s MadTech Daily, we cover Meta naming a new CMO and its first-ever Chief Data Officer, Australia suing Amazon over Prime Video ads, and OpenAI expanding hiring to develop new AI advertising formats.

Meta names new CMO & first chief data officer

Meta has appointed Denise Moreno as its new chief marketing officer following the promotion of former CMO Alex Schultz to the newly created role of chief data officer. A 17-year Meta veteran, Moreno succeeds Schultz, who spent nearly six years leading the company’s marketing function while also serving as vice-president of analytics.

In his new role, Schultz will focus on strengthening Meta’s data infrastructure and advancing AI-powered analytics, research and decision-making. Moreno, previously vice-president of consumer marketing and growth, said AI is driving the biggest transformation in marketing in a generation.

Australia sues Amazon over subscriber contracts

Australia’s consumer watchdog has launched legal action against Amazon, alleging the company used unfair contract terms when it introduced advertising to Prime Video and required subscribers to pay extra to continue watching without ads. The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission claims more than one million subscribers were affected between November 2023 and August 2025, with prepaid customers receiving an ad-supported service unless they paid an additional monthly fee.

The regulator alleges Amazon’s contracts allowed it to make significant changes to its services without offering refunds or meaningful compensation, potentially breaching Australian consumer protection laws. Amazon said it is reviewing the case and has cooperated with the investigation.

OpenAI expands hiring to develop new AI ad formats

OpenAI is accelerating development of its advertising business, with new job listings revealing plans to build text, image, video, native, conversational and interactive ad formats for ChatGPT. The company is hiring software engineers across web, iOS, and Android to build the infrastructure for ad delivery. The roles will also focus on embedding privacy, safety, and policy compliance directly into the design of its advertising systems.
