Digest: Apple Sues OpenAI Over Trade Secrets; Microsoft Partners With Nine For Copilot
by on 14th Jul 2026 in News

In today’s Digest, we look at Apple suing OpenAI over alleged trade secret theft involving former employees, Microsoft striking a deal with Nine to feature its journalism in Copilot AI results, and Integral Ad Science appointing Lidiane Jones as its new CEO.
Apple sues OpenAI over trade secrets
Apple has filed a federal lawsuit accusing OpenAI, two of its employees, and the startup io Products of engaging in "a pattern of theft" involving confidential Apple product development work. The suit claims at least two longtime Apple employees who left to join OpenAI took part in this pattern, in part by emailing themselves internal Apple information before their departure.
OpenAI spokesman Drew Pusateri pushed back against the allegations, telling the BBC that the company has "no interest in other companies' trade secrets" and is currently reviewing Apple's complaint while remaining focused on building technology that benefits people broadly. Apple, meanwhile, maintains that the lawsuit is grounded in "significant evidence."
Microsoft partners with Nine for Copilot
Microsoft has reached a landmark agreement to pay for access to journalism produced by Australian network Nine Entertainment. Microsoft's Copilot chatbot will use reporting from Nine's mastheads, including The Sydney Morning Herald, The Age, and The Australian Financial Review, when generating AI responses. The chatbot will direct users to the original articles rather than simply summarizing their content.
Copilot will surface headlines, snippets, and short summaries alongside links back to Nine's publications, steering readers toward verified reporting instead of leaving them with AI-generated text alone. Nine chief executive Matt Stanton welcomed the partnership, saying premium, verified journalism is becoming increasingly important as AI tools mature, and describing the deal as a way to serve AI users while still protecting the value of Nine's intellectual property.
Integral Ad Science names Lidiane Jones as new CEO
Integral Ad Science has appointed Lidiane Jones as its new Chief Executive Officer, effective immediately, the media quality company announced Monday. Jones takes over from Lisa Utzschneider, who steered IAS for more than seven years and will stay on through the end of 2026 as Special Advisor to the Board. Utzschneider will also advise Novacap and its portfolio companies going forward.
Company leadership pointed to Jones's background in product, technology, and AI as a strong fit for extending IAS's standing in media quality while pushing the company into its next phase of growth.
