The Stack: AI Meets Reality

This week, the AI boom collided with commercial and regulatory realities, as major platforms doubled down on AI-powered experiences. In today’s MadTech Daily, we cover Uber and Delivery Hero joining forces, Stripe and Advent launching a USD$53bn bid for PayPal, and DoorDash integrating with Shopify.

We start with some troubling news for publishers. New data from Ozone revealed that publisher ad supply fell by as much as 40% in the second quarter of 2026, as AI-generated, zero-click search results diverted users away from news websites. The findings underscore the growing disruption AI search is creating for publishers that rely on referral traffic and digital advertising revenue.

Despite those concerns, consumer-facing AI continues to expand. Spotify is testing "Talk to Spotify," a conversational AI assistant that allows Premium subscribers to discover music, podcasts and audiobooks through natural language.

OpenAI, meanwhile, found itself under pressure on several fronts. Apple filed a lawsuit accusing the company, two former Apple employees and startup io Products of misappropriating confidential product development information. At the same time, new forecasts from Emarketer suggested OpenAI's advertising business is likely to fall around 90% short of its own long-term revenue projections.

The AI company also faced geopolitical scrutiny after reports that OpenAI and Google had provided AI services to Chinese technology firms blacklisted by the Pentagon. While the arrangements remain legal, they have renewed calls for tighter US oversight of AI model exports, similar to existing restrictions on advanced semiconductor technology.

The European Union also concluded that Meta has failed to do enough to protect users' physical and mental wellbeing, arguing that the design of Facebook and Instagram encourages addictive behaviour.

Streaming wars also took another turn, with reports that Disney is considering launching a free, ad-supported tier for Disney+, a move that would mirror strategies adopted by several competitors as platforms search for new avenues of audience growth and advertising revenue.
