OpenAI Launches Video Creation Tool Sora; £3bn Legal Action Case Against Meta; Over Half of Modern Gamers Look for Games Popular on Socials

On today’s ExchangeWire digest: OpenAI Launches Video Creation Tool Sora; £3bn Legal Action Case Against Meta; Over Half of Modern Gamers Look for Games Popular on Socials

Following its enormous success with ChatGPT, OpenAI has launched Sora, a new video creation tool. The tool, named after the Japanese word for ‘sky’, generates video from text prompts. It’s able to produce realistic footage up to minute long, adhering to the user’s instruction regarding subject matter and style. The tool can also create video based on a still image or existing video footage, an OpenAI blog post explains.

Meanwhile, Meta finds itself caught up in legal action yet again. A judge has given the go ahead to  a mass legal action case worth up to £3bn, being brought by legal academic Dr Liza Lovdahl Gormsen on behalf of 45 million Facebook users. A revised version of her claim has been accepted, following the refusal of her original claim in 2023. The claim states that the social media giant has “struck an unfair bargain with its users”, abusing its dominance by making users give it their data for non-Facebook related products, including Instagram and other third party sites. It maintains that the sharing data with third parties had become a condition of accessing the platform, effectively becoming a take it or leave it offer.

Staying in the social media ambit, TikTok has published a report looking into mobile game marketing trends. The research finds the average monthly spend of US mobile gamers is $17 (£13.50). The report reveals that when it comes to deciding what to play, half of modern games believe it’s important for the game to be popular on social media. Over 70% of modern games want to play a game that comes from a brand they trust, and brand loyalty appears to be big among modern gamers: over other gamers, they are 1.6 times more likely to demonstrate loyalty to specific brands or franchises.
