The Cost of Playing Safe: Unlocking Revenue Through Trust, Standards and Regulation

Advertising compliance is moving beyond a legal exercise to become a strategic business capability, and a commercial one. Regulation across the UK, Europe and the US is fast changing and more fragmented than ever, and the industry's instinct in the face of uncertainty is to switch things off: block the category, exclude the news environment, skip the market. That caution has a cost, and it is rarely measured.

Areas such as HFSS advertising (high fat, sugar & salt foods), gambling and alcohol are taking centre stage, with brands, publishers and technology providers navigating overlapping legal, ethical and technical requirements – often using measurement built for an earlier internet. Add AI, as both tool and threat, and the picture is more complex still. This panel from ATS London 2026 examines if the real cost of regulation lands, how much of it is self-inflicted, and who is accountable for getting it right.
